The Estimator

Before the first shovel hits the dirt, there's a battle nobody sees. It happens in the Bid Hall, a room full of plans, specs, addenda, and very strong coffee. That fight belongs to the Estimator. Their oath: a number with no backup is just a guess in a nice font.

Every Estimator starts as a Takeoff Scribe. You count doors. You measure walls. You highlight every fixture on every sheet until the plans look like a rainbow exploded on them. Nothing goes uncounted. Not one outlet. Not one sink.

The scroll arrives, and the Scribe logs every sheet and every addendum, because one missed addendum is a snack for the monster that lives in here. The Margin Eater.

It's round, gold and gray, made of crumpled plan sheets, with a mouth that's a torn hole in a blueprint and teeth made of tally marks and highlighter caps. It hides in scope gaps between trades, exclusions nobody wrote down, and quantities somebody guessed instead of counted. And it's patient. It never shows up on bid day. It shows up three months later as extra work nobody agreed to. When work gets added without a change order, it grows. That's its favorite move.

Scribes who learn to see what's not on the plans become Scope Sages. With the Bid Captain, they split the job by trade and hunt the gaps in between, the work that falls through the cracks. Unit costs come from the company's own records, never from thin air, and every estimate says it's an estimate, right on top.

The legends are the Oracles of the Bid. They write the proposal: what's in, what's out, what's still a question. They slide the Abacus of Honest Numbers across the table, and the Margin Eater looks at the empty plate and slowly walks away.
