Book III · Trade Legends
The Setter
“Flat floor. Full coverage. Leave room to breathe.”
The Setters do their best work on their knees. Their oath: what we set, people walk on for twenty years. Their floors get stepped on, mopped, spilled on, dropped on, and judged by bare feet at 3 a.m. on the way to the kitchen. A floor has one job: be flat, be tight, be quiet.
Every Setter starts as a Grout Apprentice. You mix. You sponge. You wipe haze until the joints are crisp and your arms are noodles. It's humble work, and it teaches you to look closely.
Then you learn to read the ground. Every high spot gets ground down, every low spot gets filled, because you can't set a flat floor on a crooked one. In the wet rooms, the shower gets its Waterproof Ward first: membrane, corners, and a flood test that holds water overnight like a tiny indoor lake.
Down under bad floors lives the Hollow Drum. It's squat and armored, a burrowing beast whose back is a cracked patch of tile and whose belly booms like a drum. When it gets mad, its grout lines glow orange. It's born from thin-set spread too thin, subfloors nobody flattened, missing movement joints, and showers that were never waterproofed. It stays quiet for months. Then tiles crack, edges lip, and one day the whole floor tents up along the wall like it's trying to stand up and leave.
The Setters who beat it become Layout Tacticians. They dry-lay the whole room first, centered, no slivers at the door. They comb the thin-set one way, back-butter every tile, and lift one to check coverage. Full coverage. No hollow spots.
The legends are the Grand Setters of the Plane. They tap a floor with the Notched Trowel of Full Coverage and hear every hollow tile underneath. Then they leave room at the edges, because a floor needs to breathe too.
Flat floor. Full coverage. Leave room to breathe.
