Book III · Trade Legends
The Framer
“Plumb, level, square. Then nail it like you mean it.”
The Framers build the skeleton every other trade lives inside. The Plumber drills through their joists. The Electrician pulls wire through their studs. The Finisher hangs on their walls. Their oath is three words long and older than any blueprint: plumb, level, square. Everything else stands on them.
Every Framer starts as a Layout Apprentice, snapping chalk lines on the slab and marking plates at sixteen inches on center until they dream in sixteen-inch increments. The building gets drawn full size on the concrete before a single stick stands up. Measure twice, snap once.
Then the walls go up. In teams. Everybody grabs the top plate, somebody yells "Up!", and the wall rises together, with a header over every opening that carries weight. Joists crown up. Trusses get set and braced. And one afternoon you look up and the shape of the building is standing against the sky. You'll never get tired of that.
But small mistakes grow up, too. A wall a little out of plumb. A joist installed crown-down. A missing header. A stud another trade notched until it can't carry anything. Stack enough of those and you get the Crooked Titan: a huge wooden golem made of warped studs and twisted joists, leaning hard to one side, bent nails sticking out like spikes and a crooked header for a brow. Every error you build on feeds it.
The Framers who keep it small become Wall-Raising Foremen. They tie the storm down with sheathing and straps, roof to wall, wall to slab, every connector in its place, because out here the wind gets ideas.
The legends are the Grand Architects of the Bones. They sight down a wall and spot a quarter inch over eight feet. They walk the inspector through the frame and answer questions before they're asked. Then they tap the True-North Hammer on a stud, smile, and hand the building to everyone else.
Plumb, level, square. Then nail it like you mean it.
