The Plumber
“Supply in, waste out, test before you close.”
Every building has a river inside it, and the Plumbers are the ones who tame it. Their oath is old and simple: water always wins, unless you give it a road. Clean water comes in under pressure. Dirty water leaves by gravity. The two never, ever meet. Break that rule and the whole tower gets sick.
Every Plumber starts as a Pipe Apprentice, down in the underground before a single wall goes up, digging trench and carrying fittings. Slope is law, and the inspector's level is the judge. A quarter inch of fall per foot is the difference between a drain and a swamp, and the Apprentice learns it like a lullaby.
Then the stack climbs, floor by floor, and vents breathe out through the roof. The Plumber routes around the Framer's joists without notching what can't be notched. The Framer appreciates this deeply.
That's when the Drip Hydra wakes up. It's a sleek blue serpent coiled out of a pipe chase, with a bunch of hose-heads, each one dripping from a fitting-shaped mouth, brass rings around its neck joints. It's the leak that never comes alone. Rush a fitting, skip a test, and when you fix one head, two more start weeping downstream. Classic hydra.
Plumbers know you don't win by chopping heads. You win with the Trial by Pressure. Fill every line. Hold it. Watch the gauge. The gauge can't lie. If it drops, the Hydra is already in the walls, and you find it now, while you still can.
The ones who pass become Masters of the Flow. The legends are the Keepers of the Undercurrent. A Keeper puts a hand on a wall, feels the hammer in the line, and tells you which floor forgot something. They never rush a gas test. They never skip the relief valve.
At the end, faucets and toilets go in, the Tidebreaker Wrench gets one last snug quarter turn, and the river runs quietly where nobody will ever see it. That's exactly the point.
Supply in, waste out, test before you close.
