Book III · Trade Legends
The Roofer
“Shed the water. Seal the edges. Nail the pattern.”
The Roofers work closest to the sky, and the sky tests them every single day. Their oath gets shouted over the wind: the storm only has to find one mistake, so we leave it none. They're the shield over everybody else's work. If the roof fails, everything under it fails too. No pressure.
Every Roofer starts as a Tear-Off Hand. The old roof comes off, and the deck tells its secrets: soft spots, rot, old leaks. You learn to read a rotten deck by how it gives under your boots, and you learn to really, really love your harness.
Then comes the rule of the day: dry by nightfall. Whatever happens, the building is sealed before dark. Underlayment goes down lapped like dragon scales, top over bottom, so water always runs off and never in.
Because out there, the Gale Drake is circling. It's a red-gray storm dragon whose wings are torn sheets of shingles. Rain pours off its body, and its tail is a twisted strip of flashing. It lifts shingles that missed their nails. It drives rain under bad flashing. It leaves ponds on flat roofs that were never sloped to drain. It's patient, and it's loud, and it loves a skipped detail.
The Flashing Trials are where you beat it. Step flashing, counter flashing, valleys, pipe boots, every seam where roof meets wall. That's where the Drake tries to sneak in, and that's where Tear-Off Hands become Shingle Knights. Course after course, straight as the chalk line, every nail in the strip.
The legends are the Lords of the Ridge. They stand at the curb, look up once, and tell you where somebody skipped a flashing. They set the ridge cap, clear the gutters, and hold the Ridge-Cap Shield high.
Roofers don't fight the Drake during the storm. They beat it the week before. So when storm season finally comes, and the Drake slams into the tower with everything it's got, the roof doesn't even flinch. Inside, someone sleeps right through it.
Shed the water. Seal the edges. Nail the pattern.
